Another Major Step

June 14, 2011

Last night we had our first meeting with a realtor.  The townhouse showed well.  It should have.  We’ve decluttered, rearranged, eliminated and depersonalized the place about as much as we can, I think.

There’s the studio space, of course, but even that is pretty simple now.  Artists shouldn’t feel bad for me.  That corner is about the amount of space I’ll have in the motorhome, so I may as well get used to it.

The realtor was very complimentary about the way the place looked, and said she wouldn’t change a thing.  Tomorrow, the downstairs and stairway carpets get cleaned.  Then the place goes on the market officially on Wednesday.

We make our first outing in the RV this weekend.  This past Saturday, we took more stuff to the motorhome, then made another shopping pass through WalMart.  This weekend at Lake Ray Roberts State Park, north of Dallas, will be good for us.  We’ll get a better idea of where things should go, and we can give appliances like the stove, fridge, and maybe the AC an actual working test.  It will tell us if we’ve got the right mattress, give us some practice driving, backing into a parking space, and getting all the hookups figured out.  Fortunately, we’re meeting up with our oldest daughter and her family, who will be on the last homeward leg of a two week trip from Houston to Seattle and back in their 32 foot travel trailer.  My son-in-law will be a big help showing me the ropes to get this 36 foot motorhome settled in at a campground.

I’ve got some concerns about the onboard generator, and hope to get it running properly this weekend.  I didn’t get to run it as much over the last few months as I should have, so it may need some attention.  For this weekend, we’ll be plugged into “shore power” at the campground, so we won’t really need the generator, but we need to get it in good shape anyway.

I plan to take my outdoor painting gear, and may try to do some studies and sketches.

We are, to say the least, pretty excited.  We’re realistic, and we know that selling the townhouse in the current market is going to be a challenge that will test our patience and our resolve.  But just getting to this point is a major milestone in this adventure.

You are way ahead of me in getting your house to market. I still have six months to a year of work getting to that point. Good luck! You’re also ahead on the rig, as I won’t be able to purchase one until the house sells. Getting one early and having the time to test it and practice routines is a big advantage. I’ll be following your progress.
